 Received his PhD in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Director of the University of Connecticut Health Center Child Trauma Clinic and Center for Trauma Response Recovery and Preparedness (www.ctrp.org). He was Deputy for Education and Clinical Networking to the Executive Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD from 1994-1998.
He has developed the TARGET treatment model for adult, adolescent, and child traumatic stress disorders, and conducts research on psychotherapy and family therapy, health services utilization, psychometric screening and assessment, and psychiatric epidemiology. He has co-edited three recent books, Treating Traumatized Children (October 2008, Routledge, with D. Brom & R. Pat-Horenczyk), the Encyclopedia of Psychological Trauma (November 2008, Wiley, with G. Reyes & J. Elhai), and Treatment of Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders (February 2009, Guilford, with C. Courtois), and authored the first comprehensive textbook on PTSD, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Scientific and Professional Dimensions (June 2009, Elsevier/Academic Press).
Dr. Ford is the principal investigator on several federally-funded studies evaluating TARGET and other evidence-based psychosocial empowerment interventions for families, adults, and youth. Dr. Ford has prepared expert white papers on trauma and mental health for the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice, and the Child Health and Development Institute.
He has provided expert consultation on traumatic stress research and treatment to the World Health Organization, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U. S. Public Health Service Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Psychological Association, and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (for which he currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors), and serves on the Editorial Board of several leading scientific and professional journals.
